The Pre-School Learning Alliance - formed in 1961 through the initiative of a group of mothers - is a national charity and umbrella body linking 17,000 community based pre-schools, providing early education and care for nearly three-quarters of a million children under 5. Pre-schools offer a secure, home like environment, encouraging children to socialise and share with others. They have a good track record in all the key areas of the curriculum.

Early education has a profound effect on the achievement of children throughout their lives. The Alliance aims to support the active involvement of parents in their child’s early education and to provide opportunities for those same parents to participate in further training and education. A wide range of services is on offer: comprehensive membership and insurance packages, publications, nationally registered training courses from 1-day workshops to formal qualifications, information and advice on all aspects of work in the pre-school field.

The Alliance was the first body to produce guidelines and a curriculum for pre-school groups and was also the first to launch a voluntary Accreditation Scheme for groups offering exceptionally high standards. All pre-schools are registered under the Children Act, however the guidelines issued by the Alliance still set higher standards in many aspects. The Scheme has been commended by the Department of Health.
